“Wine and Cheese Evening” is an annual event organized by the International Women’s Association of Skopje (IWA). Down syndrome Center was beneficiary in 2013 and since then every year the persons with Down syndrome are in some way connected to this glamorous event.
DMWC Charity Bazaar 2013
Building on last year’s success, “Dobredojde” Macedonia Welcome Centre (DMWC) will once again celebrate the International Children’s Day.
This year the Down Syndrome Center is the beneficiary and the implementation phase has two planned activities: A Retreat in September in the village of Dihovo, Bitola and a Conference in December.
Dihovo Retreat, 20-22 September 201310 families benefited this exceptionally informative trip that included sharing information among the families, yoga, stone art, brain gym, story telling, cooking and hiking. Many families had a chance for the first time to discuss topics that they never had anyone to ask and hear other people’s opinions about. It was a very important bonding experience and since than all of the families are asking when the next similar event will be organized.
Down Syndrome Seminar – Implementation of the Charity Bazaar Fund- “Down syndrome, a Macedonian story with it’s own challenges”
Experts, medical staff and parents had an opportunity to discuss themes in relation to Down Syndrome in Macedonia.
The seminar was held on 13 and 14 of December 2013 at Hotel Porta (www.hotelporta.com.mk).

World Down Syndrome Day, 21 March 2014
The events started on the 17th and lasted until 22 March 2014. The events included Arts&Crafts, Support Walk from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy to the city square, Press Conference, Grand opening of the Film Festival and the Photo exhibition, one week presentations in the Drama Theater before the beginning of their evening performances, and a lot of media appearances and coverage in that week.
ART Workshop – QSI Students and Down Syndrome Center, 4th June 2014
Students painted a scenery of the sea, adding details like a boat, island, beach, palm tree, shells. Each student got a few plastic pieces that were decorated with beads, feathers and all kinds of different art materials. The QSI Director, staff and students were extremely welcoming and friendly. We all felt this was just a beginning of what can become a very fruitful interaction.
DMWC International Charity Bazaar 2014
This year the already traditional DMWC Charity Bazaar took place on the 7th June, Saturday. The Honorary President of DMWC International Charity Bazaar 2014 was H.E. Dusanka Divjak-Tomic, Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia in Macedonia. The host of the event was be the Municipality of Skopje.
This is the fourth year DMWC celebrated together with the children 1st June – International Children’s Day. There were be performances by schoolchildren, stands where Embassies will sell national produce and promote their countries, art workshop, Lottery and other fun activities. The Down Syndrome Center had its stand where we sold our crafts from the QSI art workshop and from previous workshops. Three persons were working on the stand and many visited us during this day.
The beneficiary was the Primary School for Children with special needs “Zlatan Sremec”. The Opening Ceremony of the Day Care room that was reconstructed and redesigned with the money from the fund we all gathered at the Bazaar in June, took place on Wednesday, 24th September at 11 am. at the School. As part of the official event the Chairperson of the Down syndrome Center signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Director of the school, which stipulates open cooperation and possibilities in the future for the Center to use this renovated space.
3rd December – International Day of people with disabilities
Under the theme of “Sustainable Development: The promise of technology”, this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities will look at this issue in the context of the post-2015 development agenda. This year the Down syndrome Center observed this day by presenting the first documentary film in which the main role was played by a person with Down syndrome from Shtip, Goce Marinkovski. The editor of the film is Eftim Trajchov Gjaurski. After the showing there was a debate and a German film “46/47” was also shown and a comparative discussion was initiated.
IWA Christmas Bazaar 2014
DSC had a stand at the traditional IWA Christmas Bazaar that took place in QSI. We were presenting the work of Elizabeta Petkovska and Florence Garrett. Percentage of the sold jewelry created by Aleksandra Zinovski Vilic and the profits of the “Alchemist” were donated to the Down Syndrome Center. We are very grateful for their contribution.
Dramski Theatre performance “Santa Clause in pink”
The persons with Down syndrome were invited to be special guests of the Dramski Theatre on the 26th December 2014. We shared Christmas packages from “Evropa” chocolate factory and “Sara Fashion”. All of the children were invited one by one to join Santa on the stage and they were very happy for that opportunity. Some were shy, but Santa made his way to them and everyone left with presents.
